Have you ever felt like tipping culture is getting way too out of hand? Well, if you need more evidence, here's a story that might make you raise an eyebrow. In a TikTok video that racked up a whopping 520,000 views last month, 30-year-old bride-to-be Ina Josipovic spilled the beans about a rather unexpected tipping moment during her wedding dress shopping.
On December 27, Josipovic excitedly shared how she found her
dream dress, only to face an unexpected twist at the checkout counter. The
cashier turned an iPad around, and there it was – a screen asking for a tip.
Josipovic, in her own words, "full-on froze."
Luckily, she was with a friend who had recently tied the
knot. In hushed tones, she asked her friend if she had also been asked to tip
for her dress, to which the friend replied with a clear "no."
Josipovic, being the savvy thinker she is, did some quick math and realized
that a 10% tip on a $1,500 to $2,000 gown was quite a hefty sum. Undeterred,
she decided to leave a custom tip of $50, as revealed in her interview with
Business Insider. Admitting it might sound like peanuts percentage-wise,
Josipovic couldn't wrap her head around the whole situation. In her TikTok
video, she questioned, "If you guys think your stylist deserves a tip, why
don't you just give her commission?"
Josipovic, overwhelmed by the unexpected popularity of her
video, chose not to name the bridal boutique. She clarified that her intention
was never to bash the store or its workers. In fact, she praised the store and
the helpful stylist. Turning to TikTok, she sought to connect with other brides
who might have faced similar situations, discovering that most hadn't.
Commenters on TikTok were equally bewildered, sharing their
own bizarre tipping experiences. One person recalled being asked for a tip at a
self-serve kiosk at a football stadium, while another mentioned being prompted
for a tip during a pregnancy ultrasound. "I was asked to tip at the
pharmacy. Pharmacy?! What am I tipping for?" wondered another viewer. A
fourth person mentioned a self-service car wash, vowing never to return.
The tipping culture in America has sparked discussions
online, with many international folks expressing their utter confusion about
the practice. Recently, a woman gained viral attention for listing all the
places she refused to tip in 2024, including for to-go food orders and even
medical services.
It seems like tipping is making its way into unexpected
corners of our lives, leaving us all scratching our heads and questioning the
norms.
